Would you care to be more specific? There's rather a lot of it. Perhaps you could cut and paste the relevant quote. There *are* documentation bugs, and this might be one of them. Or it might be your interpretation of the documentation that is being reported.

Multiplexed members (and you should use the term 'multiplexing' not 'mirroring': Multiplexing is what Oracle does. Mirroring is what RAID-1 does) can be added or dropped at any time, and the database does not need to be in the mount state.

You may get some odd statuses reported in your v$ views when it's done whilst the database is open. But those statuses clear themselves up as the logs switch.
